Newborn, Baby, and Toddler Room Transitions: When and How to Do It

Dr. Aubrie of Baby Sleep Dr. and Sleepfull Baby partners with Crate&Kids to develop a "Sleep Shop" to help parents learn when and how to transition their baby from room sharing to their own room and from a baby room to a toddler room

One of the most common questions I’m asked by parents as a sleep expert is about room transitions – as, it’s one of those moments that can feel scary to tackle! As with any change, there can be an adjustment period, and this goes for parents and little ones planning or in the midst of changing up their room situation.

I often remind parents that the room design and setup, as well as the products chosen, are essential elements of transitioning rooms that have a big impact on sleep, comfort, and safety. This is why I’m SO excited to partner with Crate&Kids to offer “The Sleep Shop” – a special collection of furniture, bedding, gear (and more!) for babies, toddlers, and kids that I put together to help parents navigate how to select items that not only look beautiful in a room (which, of course, they do!) but also support healthy sleep and are developmentally appropriate for their little one’s new capabilities and skills.

In this blog post, we’ll dive into the key room transitions in your child's first five years. We’ll cover moving from room sharing to a baby in their nursery, transitioning from a baby room to a toddler room, and finally, moving to a “big kid” room. For each stage, I’ll share tips on when to make the switch, how to do it smoothly, and how to design each room for better sleep, and a safe sleep environment, and support their growth and development.

Transitioning from Room Sharing to a Nursery

When to Make the Transition

The first big transition you’ll likely make is moving your baby into their own room. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests room sharing with your baby for at least the first six months, ideally up to one year, to reduce the risk of SIDS. However, every family is unique, and the right time to transition depends on both your and your baby’s readiness, assuming the baby’s room and sleep situation are set up safely. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Outgrowing the Bassinet: When your baby has reached the height or weight limit of their bassinet given by the manufacturer, it’s time to move to a crib. However, some babies may prefer more space sooner. If you notice your baby looking cramped, it’s ok to move them to a larger safe sleep space before they reach the limit.

  2. Increased Mobility: If your baby is starting to roll over and move around a lot, they need more room and it’s a good time to shift to a larger sleep space, which may mean a move to a separate room.

  3. Sleeping Through the Night: Babies who are naturally beginning to sleep longer stretches at night might handle the change better, and the change might be easier for caregivers as well.

  4. Parental Readiness: Feeling ready and comfortable with the transition is essential for yourself and your baby, as its best to refrain from switching back and forth once you decide to make the shift.

Tips for a Smooth Transition

Moving from room sharing with your newborn to sleeping in a nursery can be a big step, but with these tips, you can help make the transition as smooth and comfortable as possible for both you and your baby:

  1. Introduce the Nursery Gradually: Spend some time each day playing or feeding in the nursery to help your baby get used to it. Doing the bedtime routine there is also a great way to familiarize your baby with the space and help them make positive associations for sleep time there.

  2. Maintain Consistent Sleep Routines: Once you shift to the new space, keep the same bedtime routine to provide comfort and familiarity.

  3. Start with Naps: Before you fully transition your baby to their own room, try having them take naps there for a week or so to see how they do in that sleep space and get them more used to it.

  4. Use a Reliable Baby Monitor: It’s essential to have an eye on your baby while they sleep at all times if you’re not in the room with them. I recommend video monitors with night vision and a bird’s eye view to ensure you have the best vantage of your little one while they sleep.

  5. Create a Safe Sleep Environment: Ensure the crib is free of loose bedding, toys, and pillows. The crib or sleep space should be completely empty other than a firm mattress that fits the sleep space properly (no more than two fingers should fit between the mattress and frame) and a tight, properly fitted sheet.

Safety Considerations for the Nursery

Ensuring your baby’s nursery is a safe environment is crucial for their well-being, AND your peace of mind! Many parents feel more calm and secure in making this move and allowing their little ones to sleep alone in their own room when they know they’ve set it up with safety in mind. Here are some important safety measures to think about:

  • Secure Furniture: Anchor heavy furniture to the walls to prevent tipping.

  • Electrical Safety: Use outlet covers and keep cords covered and out of reach.

  • Crib Safety: Make sure the crib meets current safety standards with no drop-side rails. And ensure there’s nothing hanging over the crib or within reach of the crib. Crib placement is also important, so be sure to keep it away from windows, other furniture, and loose cords.

  • Temperature Control: Keep the room at a comfortable temperature to avoid overheating. Between 68-72 degrees is ideal, but if it falls outside this range then focus on appropriate clothing and layers.

  • Window Safety: Use cordless blinds or secure cords out of reach.

  • Emergency Detection: Always test and maintain the working condition of fire alarms and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Close the Door: This is important for keeping pets outside the room with a sleeping baby and can save a life in case of a fire.

My Top Product Picks for the Nursery

I’ve carefully selected these products to help create a safe, comfortable, and soothing environment for your baby’s nursery. Here are my top picks, organized by different aspects of the nursery:

For the Bedtime Routine

Here are some elements that can help you create a calm, comfortable bedtime routine that helps your little one wind down and prepare for sleep:

  1. Nanit Sound + Light: I love the Nanit Sound and Light because it’s a convenient, 2-in-1 product! I recommend the white noise to be kept on anytime your little one is sleeping to help drown out unwanted noises that could potentially wake then earlier than intended. The light options are great for a dim and calming bedtime environment or for stimulation-free middle-of-the-night feeds and diaper changes. This product also comes with an app that allows you to create schedules of light and sound to make it even more convenient!

  2. Babyletto Kiwi Nursery Glider Recliner Chair with Electronic Control and USB: If you're going to splurge on one nursery item, I recommend the Babyletto Kiwi Nursery Glider Recliner Chair. It's SO comfortable for all those feeding, rocking, reading, and snuggling moments. The chair reclines with a push of a button, glides smoothly, has head and arm support for caregivers holding sleeping babies, and even has a built-in USB port to keep your phone charged. Plus, it's perfect for reading books with your toddler as they grow, making it a long-lasting investment.

For the Sleep Space

A safe and comfortable sleep space is essential for your baby’s rest and well-being. Here are my top product picks to create the perfect sleep arrangement:

  1. Hampshire Wood Convertible Baby Crib: I love this crib because it comes in a few neutral colors that work for any room design and it grows with your baby! It transitions from a crib to a toddler bed, making it a great long-term investment.

  2. BeautySleep Superior Rest Baby Crib and Toddler Mattress: This mattress has a dual-sided design that grows with your child. The firmer side is used for infants, which is essential for safe baby sleep, and a cushier side gives added comfort for growing toddlers.

  3. Mist Blue Embroidered Stitch Organic Cotton Blackout Curtain Panel: Say it with me “DARKNESS.” A dark sleep environment is one of the most essential elements of helping your little one get the restorative rest their brains and bodies need for development. These blackout curtains help create a dark, sleep-friendly environment while being gorgeous and sleek.

  4. Imperfect Checkerboard Wool Calm Beige Kids Area Rug: This rug adds comfort and warmth to the nursery, especially if you have wood floors, and it also looks great. Its soft, plush texture is perfect for your baby's playtime, providing a gentle and comfy surface for crawling and exploring. Plus, the calming beige color helps limit distractions for better sleep during nap and bedtime routines.

For Peace of Mind

Having peace of mind knowing your baby is safe and sound while they sleep is invaluable. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that the following is my all-time, ride-or-die, top pick for baby monitors that I have used with all three of my kids over the past 7 years.

  1. Nanit Pro Smart HD Split Screen Baby Monitor with Floor Stand: This monitor is the best. It has an associated app that tracks your baby’s sleep patterns so you can see the data and memories over time. It also has real-time alerts, like letting you know when “your baby is standing in the crib,” which is extremely helpful. Plus, the versatile floor stand can easily be moved so you always get the best view of your little one (not to mention the crisp night vision camera).

Transitioning from a Baby Room to a Toddler Room

When to Make the Transition

Usually, the switch from a baby room to a toddler room happens somewhere between 18 months and 3 years old. However, I strongly recommend pushing this transition off as long as you can to ensure your little one is developmentally ready to handle the increased freedom of a big bed! Many parents make the move too soon out of sheer excitement without realizing the implications of this big decision. However, if the sleep situation has become dangerous in any way - it’s time to make the move, regardless of developmental readiness. By dangerous, I mean that your child has reached the height or weight capacity for their sleep space, or they have attempted to climb out of their crib.

Here are some signs your child might be ready to make this move; but remember that one of these signs alone is not usually a reason to make this big change — other than the signs that are a safety concern:

  1. Attempting to Climb Out of the Crib: As mentioned, if your little one has tried to escape the crib, it's time to move to a toddler bed or straight to a “big-kid” bed. There is a serious safety risk for children attempting to climb out of cribs, so this move is essential if this is the case for your little one.

  2. Increased Understanding: Toddlers who have shown a stronger understanding of consequences and rules might be ready for a new room.

  3. Verbalizing Wants: Toddlers who begin asking about having a “big-kid” bed or showing interest in siblings’ or friends’ beds might be getting closer to being ready to transition out of a crib.

  4. Outgrowing the Crib: If your toddler looks cramped in the crib, they may need more space to sleep comfortably. But again, check the manufacturer’s height and weight limits for your specific crib or sleep space and ensure your toddler moves to a bed if they’ve reached either of them.

What are NOT reasons to make this transition?

I like to point out that sometimes toddlers are moved out of their crib before they are ready or it’s necessary, and then parents regret it because sleep gets totally off track. The three most common reasons I’ve found that this happens are:

  1. New Baby on the Way: A new baby coming along doesn’t necessarily mean the older sibling is ready for a big bed. Ideally, wait until all the signs of readiness are there. In the meantime, have your new baby sleep in a bassinet or pack-n-’play, or consider having your toddler use a pack-n-play suited for their height and weight until they’re truly ready for the transition. These options ensure a smoother and safer move for everyone involved.

  2. Excitement: Sometimes, we get so excited about the idea of change, but that should not be the only reason for such a big transition. Sometimes there is a bit of a ‘honeymoon’ phase with an exciting change like this, but ultimately, if your toddler isn’t truly ready, their sleep will regress, and problems will pop up! Try your best to wait until they are ready.

  3. Trying to Fix Something: Toddler sleep can ebb and flow as their sleep needs change, and sometimes we want to fix whatever seems to be thrown off, like nap refusal, sudden night wakings, or being afraid of the dark. Instead of making the huge leap of saying goodbye to the crib, focus on getting to the bottom of the sleep disturbance.

Tips for a Smooth Transition

Transitioning your child from a baby room to a toddler room is a big milestone. Here are some tips to help make this change as smooth and enjoyable as possible for both you and your toddler:

  1. Involve Your Toddler: Let them help make any possible design or color choices for their “new room” to get them excited.

  2. Keep Familiar Items: Use familiar blankets, stuffed animals, and decor to make the updated or new room feel comforting.

  3. Gradual Introduction: Start with naps in the toddler bed before transitioning to full nights if it’s possible to have both sleep spaces in the room at the same time. A countdown chart is also a great way to help your little one mentally prepare for the big move.

  4. Talk Through the Ground Rules: With a big bed comes big freedom to roam or even leave their room (which is quite common). Talking through the “ifs” and “what to dos” of their new sleep situation ahead of time and often before the transition is helpful. For example, what should they do if they have to go potty? What should they do if they wake up needing you? Then, reinforce the “rules” by continuing to practice them. Repetition and practice create success here!

  5. Consistent Bedtime Routine: Keep the bedtime routine the same as it was when they were in a crib to provide a sense of familiarity and consistency.

  6. Only One Change at a Time: Try not to combine big changes, like moving out of the crib and potty training at once. These things can have an impact on the success of the transitions.

  7. Safety Measures: Use bed rails or bumpers to prevent falls and ensure the room is fully toddler-proofed (more on this below).

Safety Considerations for the Toddler Room

Ensuring your toddler’s new room is safe is essential for their well-being. Here are some key safety measures to keep in mind as you set up their space:

  1. Anchor Furniture: Secure dressers, bookshelves, and other furniture to the wall to prevent tipping.

  2. Safe Sleep Space: Use bed rails or a low bed to prevent falls.

  3. Electrical Safety: Cover outlets and keep cords out of reach.

  4. Toy Safety: Keep small toys or choking hazards out of reach.

  5. Window Safety: Use cordless blinds and window guards, and keep furniture away from windows to prevent climbing.

  6. Medicine Safety: Since they have free roam of their room, ensure any kid’s medicine is safely stocked out of possible reach.

  7. Total home Safety: Depending on the layout of your home, ensure the house is toddler-proofed, including closing off staircases.

  8. Emergency Detection: Always test and maintain the working condition of fire alarms and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  9. Close the Door: This is important for keeping pets outside the room with a sleeping baby and can save a life in case of a fire.

My Top Product Picks for the Toddler Room

As your little one transitions to a toddler room, it's important to create a space that is safe, comfortable, and inviting. Here are my top picks for products that will make this transition smoother and more enjoyable for both of you:

For the Bedtime Routine

Establishing a consistent bedtime routine helps your toddler feel secure and ready for sleep. These products are perfect for creating a soothing bedtime experience:

  1. Jellycat White Bunny Kids Stuffed Animal: I recommend a stuffed animal or lovey for toddlers to sleep with because it provides comfort and a sense of security, helping them use their furry friend as a transitional object as they separate from you for the night.

  2. Harbour Natural Flange Nursery Swivel Glider Chair: If you’re looking to upgrade your nursery chair or didn’t have one, this is a great one for a redesigned toddler bedroom. It has a swivel and glide feature, and it’s wider than my recommended baby chair, so it provides plenty of room for cozy bedtime stories and snuggles with your growing child.

For the Sleep Space

Creating a safe and comfortable sleep space is key for your toddler’s rest and development. Here are my recommendations for their new bed setup:

  1. Hampshire Cozy Grey Spindle Wood Kids Daybed: This daybed is perfect for toddlers transitioning out of a crib or toddler bed because its low-to-the-ground design reduces the risk of falls and promotes independence. If your little one is not ready for a “big kid” bed yet and your crib has the option to transition to a toddler bed with a safety rail, that’s a wonderful option too!

  2. SuperSoft Pampas Ivory Organic Cotton Gauze Kids Quilt Bedding Set: Including your toddler in choosing their new bedding can make them excited about transitioning out of a crib. The Supersoft Pampas Ivory Organic Cotton Gauze Kids Quilt Bedding Set comes in various colors, allowing your little one to pick what reflects their personality, making the new bed feel special and personal. Plus, the breathable organic cotton keeps them cozy all night, and the hypoallergenic fabric is gentle on sensitive skin, ensuring a restful and safe sleep environment.

  3. Beautyrest Select Medium Twin Mattress: This mattress is perfect for a toddler’s “big kid” bed because its medium firmness is much more comfortable than an infant crib mattress, but still offers a cozy, supportive sleep surface for your growing little one.

  4. Montauk White Wood 3-Drawer Kids Dresser with Door by Leanne Ford: I love the Montauk Dresser for a toddler's bedroom because its accessible design allows little ones to easily reach their clothes, fostering independence as they learn to dress themselves and have some control over their bedtime routine when picking out their own pajamas.

For comfort and play

Toddlers need a cozy and fun space to play and relax. Here are some great products to make their room inviting:

  1. Large Cyprus Green Kids Lounge Nod Chair: The spacious and comfy design of this lounge chair encourages your little one to sit and enjoy books on their own, fostering a love for reading and providing a cozy spot for reading during the bedtime routine (especially if your child’s space is smaller and you don’t have room for one of the larger recliner chairs!). My kids love their nod chairs so much!

  2. Hampshire Small Cozy Grey Wood 2-Shelf Bookcase: This bookshelf is perfect for a toddler's bedroom because it's just the right height for little ones to reach their books and toys easily. Pro tip: rotate a smaller selection of books each month so that your little one has an easier time choosing what to read for bedtime and feels like they’re always getting new books to choose from!

For lighting

Proper lighting is important for playtime, quiet time, and bedtime. Here are my top lighting picks:

  1. Modern White Dome Touch Kids Table Lamp: I love this touch lamp for a toddler bedroom because it has a simple touch control to make it easy for your little one to use on their own. The soft, adjustable lighting is perfect for winding down with bedtime stories or “quiet hour” once your toddler is ready to stop napping, creating a calming atmosphere. Plus, it has a dim option for middle-of-the-night diaper changes or bathroom trips, making it super practical.

  2. Thorne Green Metal Dual Head Floor Lamp: I always love a floor lamp for lighting up a space for playtime, reading, or winding down before bed when you don’t have great overhead lighting or the overhead lighting is just too bright. You can also direct the light exactly where it's needed, making it a cozy and functional addition to your little one's space.

For Monitoring and Soothing

Keeping an eye on your toddler and ensuring they have a soothing environment is crucial long stretches of restorative sleep. These are the products I recommend for a positive impact on both:

  1. Nanit Pro Smart HD Split Screen Baby Monitor with Floor Stand: I recommend the Nanit Camera and Floor Stand for a redesigned toddler bedroom because it lets you keep a clear eye on your little one with video monitoring and sleep tracking. The floor stand is easy to move around the room and has covered wires for added safety, so there are no loose cords for your toddler to tug on or trip over.

  2. Nanit Baby Sound Machine and Night Light: The Nanit Sound and Light is helpful for toddlers because it has a number of helpful functions, including white noise, a night light, and acting as an “ok to wake” clock. You can use the app to customize the sleep and wake times, and let your toddler participate in choosing the colors that let them know when nap time or quiet hour is over or when it’s officially morning.

  3. FridaBaby 2-in-1 Portable Baby Sound Machine and Nightlight: I recommend a travel sound machine for toddlers because it creates a consistent, soothing sleep environment no matter where they are. It’s so helpful for blocking out unexpected sounds when you’re away from home and have less control of the sleep environment. This makes it easier to stick to nap and bedtime routines even when you're on the go.

Transitioning from a Toddler Room to a Big Kid Room

When to Make the Transition

This transition usually happens between 4 and 6 years old, when your child is ready for a more mature sleeping space that reflects their growing independence and interests. Here are some signs your child might be ready:

  1. Outgrowing Toddler Bed: If your child looks cramped, it’s time for a bigger bed. If you switched from a crib right to a twin bed, there’s nothing you need to change here!

  2. Expressing Preferences: If your child starts having specific likes and dislikes about their room and you’re able to accommodate them, that’s a wonderful way to help them feel independent and vocal about their feelings.

  3. Increased Activities: As they start school and other activities, making some updates to support homework and hobbies might make sense. However, these are things that might lean a bit older, like between the ages of 8-10.

  4. Desire for Privacy: As kids get older, they often want more privacy and a space that feels like their own. Updating (and even just rearranging) their room is a great way to help foster this independence. Again, this is something that’s likely to come further down the line once they hit double digits.

  5. Readiness for Responsibility: If your child can keep their room tidy and take ownership over their space, they might be ready to make updates that reflect having a “big kid” room.

Tips for a Smooth Transition to a Big Kid Room

Moving to a big kid room can be a significant change for your child, depending on the updates. Here are some practical tips to help ensure the transition is smooth and stress-free:

  1. Personalize the Space: If possible, try including your child in choosing colors, decor, and themes that reflect their personality and interests.

  2. Incorporate Storage Solutions: Providing ample storage for toys, books, and school supplies can help keep the room organized and decluttered, which is important for helping your child feel comfortable and at ease in their space — and helps to create a tranquil sleep environment.

  3. Create Zones: Designate areas for sleeping, “studying,” and playing to help your little one shift between activities and keep their space tidy by having a clear understanding of where related items are stored. I always tell my kids that everything has to have a home! Books on the bookshelf so they’re ready for the bedtime routine, and so on.

  4. Consistent Routine: As always, maintaining a consistent bedtime and wake-up routine, regardless of changes to the sleep space, ensures your child understands the boundaries around their room, bedtime, and sleep.

My Top Product Picks for a “Big Kid” Room

As your child grows, their sleep environment continues to play a crucial role in their sleep quality. Just like us, having a well-designed, comfortable, and clutter-free space helps them rest better. Even as a new, big seven-year-old, we still do a bedtime routine and keep a consistent, early bedtime for my daughter – and she loves it because she knows exactly what to expect! Here are my top product picks for creating a fantastic big kid room that supports a healthy sleep environment.

For the Bedtime Routine

Like I said above, a bedtime routine is still important for big kids (I would argue they’re important at every age!), and helps ensure your child winds down for the night to get the restful sleep they need to be their best self the next day. These products are perfect for creating a calming bedtime experience:

  1. Nanit Baby Sound Machine and Night Light: The Nanit Light + Sound continues to be useful even for kids because it offers soothing sound and gentle night light options to create a calming sleep routine and environment, helping kids wind down before going to sleep. Additionally, you can use the light and sounds to gently wake them up in the morning, making the transition from sleep to the start of the day smoother using their sounds and light scheduler (i.e. an “ok to wake” or signal for morning).

  2. Modern White Dome Touch Kids Table Lamp: This desk lamp is a good choice for kids because its easy touch control fosters independence, allowing them to turn it on and off by themselves. The adjustable light settings make it perfect for winding down during bedtime routines, creating a calm atmosphere for reading or relaxing before sleep.

  3. Jellycat White Bunny Kids Stuffed Animal: I recommend a stuffed animal for sleep and as a transitional object even for bigger kids because it provides comfort and a sense of security, helping them feel safe and relaxed at bedtime. This familiarity can ease anxiety and make the transition to sleep smoother, offering emotional support that can be especially helpful during changes or stressful times.

For the Sleep Space

Creating a comfortable and inviting sleep space is essential for your child’s rest and well-being. Here are my recommendations for setting up their new bed and sleep area:

  1. Weston Natural Cream Upholstered Kids Twin Bed: This comfortable and stylish "big kid" bed can help kids feel excited and positive about moving out of their toddler bed. When kids feel safe and calm, they can relax and sleep better. A cozy, secure environment encourages your child to settle down and embrace their new sleep space with confidence. You can consider using bumpers as needed if your child is still learning how to sleep in a big bed.

  2. SuperSoft Pampas Ivory Organic Cotton Gauze Kids Quilt Bedding Set: I love this bedding set because its soft, breathable material ensures a comfortable night's sleep for big kids who need lots of rest. Kids can add their own personality by choosing their favorite color or mixing and matching, making their bed a cozy reflection of their unique style.

  3. Mist Blue Embroidered Stitch Organic Cotton Blackout Curtain Panel: I recommend blackout curtains for school-aged children because they create a dark, cozy environment that helps them fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. By blocking out light, these curtains make sure kids get the restful sleep they need to be energetic and focused for school the next day. This is especially helpful for times like daylight savings when older kids can easily spot that their bedtime routine might be taking place when it’s still light out!

  4. Modern Soccer Field Wool Charcoal Kids Colorful Area Rug: This rug’s soft, high-quality wool makes a comfortable and cozy spot for your child to play and it helps warm up a space. Of course, if your kiddo isn’t into soccer, I recommend finding something that ties the theme of their room together! This is just an example of how room design can help your child fall in love with their space and actually want to hang out and sleep in there!

For Comfort and Play

Big kids need a cozy and fun space to play, relax, and be themselves. Here are some products that make their room inviting and comfortable:

  1. Terracotta Velvet Corduroy Kids Lounge Chair: I love this lounge chair for a redesigned big kid room because it's super comfy and perfect for winding down after a busy day. Your child will love having a cozy spot to read, relax, or just chill out, adding a touch of warmth and comfort to their new space.

  2. Ever Simple Modular Slate Blue Wood Kids Workspace Suite: This Workspace Suite helps kids keep their study area separate from their rest space, promoting better focus and relaxation. With plenty of storage, they can easily organize their supplies, creating a clutter-free workspace that encourages productivity and independence while keeping their bedroom calm and restful.

For Sleep on the Go

Whether for sleepovers or travel, having portable sleep space is so helpful. Here’s my top pick:

  1. JetKids by Stokke CloudSleeper: This travel mattress is perfect for giving your child a comfortable and safe sleep space while traveling. It's super easy to carry and set up, ensuring your little one gets a good night's sleep on the go. And I love this because it provides an option for your kiddos to be in the same hotel room or room at a friend’s house without needing a room with an extra bed or even requesting an additional cot which takes up a lot of space or might not be possible.

Remember, even though your child may be getting older and a wonderful sleeper, their sleep space still has a significant impact on sleep quality. Continue to use products that support a healthy sleep environment to ensure your child gets the restful sleep they need to thrive.

The journey from room sharing with your newborn to creating a toddler room, then eventually a big kid room is filled with significant milestones and transitions.
